States change these rules, sometimes with little notice. Before you register, start collecting or decide you do not need to, read the state's own page linked for each state below and talk to your CPA.

Check your numbers.
Add each state you ship to. Enter last year's sales into that state and the number of orders. We compare them with that state's line and tell you if you look over it, close to it or under it.

Close means within 20 percent of the line. This is a rough check. Many states measure the current year or a rolling twelve months as well as last year, and some count only retail or taxable sales, so a state can apply even when this says under. Nothing you type leaves your browser.
Reading the table.
A threshold is the point where a state can require you to register, collect its tax and file returns, even with no shop there.
Sales to stitchers, not to shops
Each state decides which sales count toward its line. Some count every sale shipped into the state. Others count only retail or only taxable sales, so wholesale canvases sold to shops with a resale certificate may not count. The details for each state say what its source says.
Small thread orders add up
Where a state still uses a transaction count, a shop that mails a lot of single cards and small fiber orders can reach it long before the dollar total looks large. Use the transaction filter to find those states.
Marketplace orders
Every state with a sales tax has a marketplace rule, and in nearly all of them a marketplace like Etsy or Amazon collects on the orders it handles. States differ on whether those orders count toward your own line, so keep each platform's tax report.
Markets are a different rule
These thresholds are for shipping into a state. Selling in person at a market or a trunk show in another state can require a permit for those days, whatever your yearly total. Our sales tax guide for needlepoint shops walks through markets, wholesale and the records to keep.
Thresholds get crossed one canvas at a time. Our bookkeeping for needlepoint shops pulls your sales by state every month and brings in our CPA and tax partners when a state gets close.
